Frequently Asked Questions

What is covered during a year with The Shalom Project?

We cover the cost of rent and all utilities, transportation (house vehicle and public transportation passes), food, learning experiences / group outings, and counseling or spiritual direction sessions. Each participant receives a $118 monthly stipend. We also have arrangements with two seminaries, enabling you to take a class for free during your year with us if that appeals to you.

Is there a cost to join The Shalom Project?

No. We want to set the financial bar as low as possible, recognizing that college graduates often carry significant student loan debt. We ask that participants help with fundraising and recruiting throughout the year as a way of contributing to the program.

Do you offer paid internships?

Our work placements are unpaid volunteer experiences. We cover all living expenses during for our participants so that each one can focus on giving their time away in service to the community and on personal growth.

Will I be able to defer my student loans as a Shalom Project participant?

Yes. Because income is limited to the monthly stipend, participants qualify for federal loan assistance. In most cases income-based repayment is the best option. This pauses payments during a Shalom year and recalculates payments based on income after a Shalom year. Interest may still accrue if your loan is unsubsidized.

Can I find another part-time job during my year with The Shalom Project?

Because The Shalom Project year is an immersive experience, we ask that participants not be employed outside of their internship placements. The process of getting to know the household and broader community, and engaging in a variety of opportunities and experiences, takes time and presence. Our desire is for you to be fully engaged in this experience.
